Dear Health Ministers,
I am writing to you to request that Federal and State Health Ministers consider a review of the Health Star Rating System to account for the nutritional benefits of fresh juice.
The current algorithm in place penalises fresh juice with no added sugar for its natural sugar content and does not count the added nutritional benefits of fresh juice including Vitamin C, Thiamin and Folate.
The current 2.5 stars for fresh Australian juice is an oversight of the Health Star Rating System and has sent a mixed, and disturbing message to Australian consumers.
Currently, a shocking 94% of Australians don’t eat the recommended amount of fruit and vegetables each day.
A review of Australia’s Health Star Rating System would reassure consumers that a glass of fresh juice, as regulated under the Australian dietary guidelines, is a nutritious alternative to sugar-based chemically-enhanced drinks.
In order to restore faith in Australian consumers and growers, it is vital that a review of the Health Star Rating system take place and nutritional value
In order to avoid sending the wrong message to Australian consumers, and growers, it is vital that Health Ministers see sense in their decision when granting fresh juice its Health Star Rating.
Please consider the nutritional value of home-grown fruit and vegetables as well as the hard-working growers behind the scenes.
