Search begins for next Chair of NFF Horticulture Council

The National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) Horticulture Council has today announced the commencement of recruitment for its next Chair, with current Chair Jolyon Burnett set to conclude his term at the end of June.

The Council is seeking an experienced and independent leader to guide its work as the national peak forum for horticulture policy and advocacy.

The Council plays a central role in shaping national policy across key issues including workforce, trade, biosecurity, sustainability and fair, efficient domestic markets, representing a diverse and rapidly growing sector of Australian agriculture.

The successful candidate will be appointed for an initial three-year term to 30 June 2029, with the opportunity for extension, and will be responsible for leading the Council in delivering its strategic priorities and strengthening its role as a trusted, influential national voice.

NFF Horticulture Council Chair Jolyon Burnett said it was the right time to begin the search for the Council’s next leader as the sector continued to evolve.

“The Council has matured into a respected and effective national voice for horticulture, and the next Chair will have an important role in building on that foundation,” Mr Burnett said.

“Australia’s horticulture industry faces both significant opportunities and complex challenges — from workforce pressures to market access and biosecurity — and strong, collaborative leadership will be critical.

“We are looking for someone who can bring people together, foster robust and respectful debate, and help ensure the industry continues to speak with a clear and unified voice nationally.”

Mr Burnett said the role required a demonstrated ability to chair policy-setting bodies and engage constructively in public debate on issues affecting the industry.

NFF Chief Executive Officer Michael Guerin said the recruitment marked an important milestone for the Council and recognised the strong foundation built under Mr Burnett’s leadership.

“Jolyon has led the Council with integrity, generosity and a genuine commitment to bringing the industry together, helping to build a stronger, more cohesive voice for horticulture at the national level,” Mr Guerin said.

“On behalf of the NFF, I want to sincerely thank him for the time, effort and care he has invested in supporting growers and advancing the Council’s work.

“The NFF Horticulture Council is a key pillar within the NFF’s federated structure, bringing together industry leaders to shape policy on issues that matter to growers across the country.

“Horticulture is a highly diverse and dynamic sector, and having a strong, credible Chair is essential to ensuring its interests are effectively represented to government and the broader community.

“We are seeking a candidate with the experience, networks and leadership capability to help the Council continue delivering practical, national outcomes for growers.”

Applications for the position are now open and will close at 5pm AEST, Friday 22 May.
