Since 1979, the National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) has been the national voice of Australian farmers.
Through our federated membership, we represent the interests of Australia’s farm businesses, bringing together commodity organisations and state farming organisations to advocate for a productive, sustainable and profitable future for Australian agriculture.
For nearly half a century, we have worked to ensure farmers have a strong and respected voice in Canberra, influencing decisions that affect farming businesses, families, regional communities and the nation’s food and fibre supply. Our purpose is simple: to lead Australian agriculture and help create the conditions for farmers to succeed.
The NFF exists because farmers are stronger when they work together. Every day, we engage with governments, policymakers, industry leaders and the community to advocate for practical solutions that strengthen Australian agriculture. We do this through evidence-based policy, trusted relationships and a commitment to representing the interests of farmers, regardless of who is in government.
Our influence spans the issues that matter most to agriculture from tax, trade and workforce challenges to sustainability, technology, climate, biosecurity and regional development. As Australia’s peak farm body, we help ensure the voices of farmers are heard where decisions are made.
Over the decades, the NFF has helped influence reforms that have strengthened the competitiveness of Australian agriculture and improved the operating environment for farm businesses. More recently, we have successfully advocated on key tax and business policy issues affecting farmers and regional communities, ensuring the practical realities of running a farm business are understood by decision-makers.
While individual policy wins are important, our broader impact lies in creating the conditions that allow Australia’s agricultural sector to grow, innovate and thrive.
In 2018, the NFF challenged the sector to think bigger, launching the 2030 Roadmap and setting an ambitious goal to grow Australian agriculture into a $100 billion industry by 2030. The Roadmap was developed through extensive consultation across the agricultural value chain and provided a shared vision for the future of the sector. Based on current forecasts, the industry is on track to reach that milestone years ahead of schedule.
The Roadmap has helped guide conversations about productivity, sustainability, innovation, people and communities, proving what can be achieved when industry works together towards a common goal.
Every Australian relies on agriculture every day. That’s why the NFF backs initiatives that strengthen the connection between farmers and the wider community. Through National Agriculture Day, we celebrate the people, innovation and contribution of Australian agriculture while helping bridge the gap between the city and the country. Each year, millions of Australians engage with stories about the people behind their food and fibre, helping build understanding, trust and appreciation for the sector.
The future of agriculture depends on the people who lead it. The NFF is committed to developing leaders who reflect the diversity, talent and ambition of the sector. Through programs such as the Diversity in Agriculture Leadership Program, we are supporting emerging leaders, building stronger networks and helping ensure the sector remains innovative, resilient and representative of the communities it serves.
From National Agriculture Day to AgXchange and other industry events, the NFF creates opportunities for farmers, industry, government, researchers and community leaders to connect, share ideas and tackle challenges together. These conversations help determine policy, inspire innovation and strengthen the collective voice of Australian agriculture.
