The countdown is on to the biggest day on the agricultural calendar, with farmers and everyday Australians tipping their hats to Aussie grown food and fibre this Friday, November 15 for National Agriculture Day.
National Farmers’ Federation President David Jochinke said AgDay and the theme “Grow you good thing!” was all about celebrating Aussie grown and connecting Australians with our farm sector.
“It doesn’t matter where you live or what you do, every single person depends on agriculture every single day. National Agriculture Day is the perfect way to recognise and celebrate this,” Mr Jochinke said.
“In Australia it’s easy to pop into the supermarket and load up the trolley full of fresh, nutritious food. That’s simply not the case in some part of the world,” Mr Jochinke said.
“Even at the moment, when some parts of Australia are struggling with extremely dry times, consumers don’t notice a difference when they’re shopping.
“Australian farmers are up there as the best in the world at what they do. We should all be proud of that – and farmers should be proud of the work they do to feed and clothe us.”
Mr Jochinke encouraged everyday Australians to participate in the day by joining an event, wearing their AgDay t-shirt and learning about farming. He also encouraged farmers to participate in the day and show the world why they love what they do.
“I know it’s a busy time for many farmers with grain harvest in full swing, but I hope farmers can also take a moment to share with the public what’s happening on their farm.”
From hosting a barbecue with friends to joining AgDay events near you, there are plenty of ways to get into the spirit of National Agriculture Day. Here are a few ideas:
Host a backyard BBQ or paddock picnic. Bring together friends, family or workmates and enjoy the best of what our farmers grow.
Share your story. Whether you’re in agriculture or just passionate about it, post on social media with #AgDayAU and tell us why you’re proud to support Aussie farming.
School celebrations. Teachers and students can learn about the science behind agriculture, participate in AgDay activities, and discover how food gets from the paddock to their plates and fibre is turned into clothes and everyday items.
Win cash prizes. The AgDay photo and video competition is open until 5pm (AEDT) on Friday. There’s a $5000 prize pool up for grabs thanks to Syngenta. All you need to do is submit your image that represents the theme, Grow you good thing!
