NFF welcomes Federal Government's cash injection for drought-affected farmers

The National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) has welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement of immediate additional financial support to drought-affected farming families.
NFF President Fiona Simson said lump sum payments of up to an additional $12,000 to farmers eligible for the Farm Household Allowance would provide significant relief from the hardship currently facing many.
“Presently, farming families in drought-affected areas are in need of support to feed livestock and meet household and other financial commitments.
“An extra cash payment, in addition to the fortnightly payment of up to $16,000 per year, will provide eligible farmers with a much-needed cash injection.”
Ms Simson, who accompanied Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Agriculture Minister David Littleproud on a part of a tour of drought stricken New South Wales and Queensland during June said it was clear, the Government had listened to the feedback received from farmers.
“Today’s announcement of $12,000 for eligible farming couples and $7000 for singles, complements the Government’s recent extension of the Farm Household Allowance from three to four years.
“The increase of the asset cap, from $2.6 million to $5 million for eligible farmers, will also provide access to the Farm Household Allowance to many more farmers in need of support.
The Prime Minister’s announcement today takes the The Federal Government’s drought relief package to $576 million.
Farmers can also benefit from the Government’s $5 million investment in the provision of Rural Financial Counselling and $11.4 million in mental health support initiatives.
“It’s vital that we help farmers and families that are dealing with the stress and pressures drought brings.”
Ms Simson said as each day passed with no rainfall, the situation for drought-affected communities became more serious.
“Sourcing fodder is becoming more difficult, farmers are having to make more tough decisions about whether to feed or sell livestock, including breeding stock. Water supplies are also running out.”
“I urge all farmers doing it tough to check their eligibility for the support available – both at a Federal and State level.”
