Statement on Europe’s glyphosate decision

Statement by Tony Mahar, National Farmers’ Federation, Chief Executive

The NFF welcomes the decision made by the European Commission in recent days to approve the renewal of glyphosate for a further 10 years until 15 December 2033.

The EC’s renewal is an important outcome for agriculture not just within the EU but for producers around the world. The decision recognises the important role glyphosate plays in safe food and fibre production.

The NFF has for some time held concerns around the politicisation of the decision and the ramifications it would have both within the EU and beyond, and has long supported renewal in the EU, noting this is consistent with the contemporary scientific evidence base.

Australian agriculture relies on glyphosate as a safe and effective tool in the production of food and fibre, with its use in Australia underpinned by our world-leading regulator.
