The National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) welcomes Interim Chief Executive Su McCluskey’s appointment as one of 11 representatives on the newly formed National Food Council.
The beef producer has been appointed in her capacity as Chair of the Crawford Fund for Food Security, an organisation seeking to increase Australia’s engagement in international agricultural research and development in food and nutrition security.
The NFF also welcomed Tracy Sullivan’s appointment, a Director with NFF member, the Australian Veterinary Association.
The establishment of the National Food Council will help the Federal Government develop “Feeding Australia: A National Food Security Strategy”, one of the NFF’s key election priorities.
NFF President Hamish McIntyre said putting Australia’s supply chain under the microscope was long overdue.
“Farmers depend heavily on imported inputs for their crops and livestock. When access is impaired, it directly impacts farmers’ ability to produce food and fibre.
“Events like extreme weather, geopolitical tensions and global disruptions, like the Covid pandemic, can all cause the food system to buckle.
“We must also look at all the potential cracks in the system, including domestic pressure on land, water and infrastructure.
“A strong and resilient food system relates directly to farmers’ bottom lines and keeping food affordable for Australian households.”
Mr McIntyre congratulated Ms McCluskey on her appointment.
“Ms McCluskey’s deep understanding of agricultural systems in Australia and abroad makes her appointment a win for all farmers.
“The NFF looks forward to working with all council members and the Government to develop a strategy that delivers for farmers and all Australians.”
