The world’s population is forecast to exceed 9 billion people by 2050, and demand for food and fibre is on track to increase by 60 per cent in that timeframe.
There is no doubt meeting this demand in the context of a changing environment, while at the same time contributing to global action to reduce emissions, is a challenge for all.
In December 2015, 195 countries including Australia, under the banner of the United Nations Framework Convention negotiated the “Paris Agreement” which aims to hold the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and to increase the ability to adapt to climate change.
Specifically, the Australian Government committed to implementing an economy wide target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 26 to 28 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030.
In 2017 the Australian Government will undertake a comprehensive review of climate change policies. NFF’s suite of climate policies (links below), together with our views about the future of energy generation are the basis of our contribution to this important national debate.
