The below is the opening statement by National Farmers’ Federation Farming Systems Committee Chair, Chris Groves, who appeared before at the public hearing for the Inquiry by the Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security.
The Committee is reviewing an Exposure Draft of the Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Bill 2026. The proposed legislation includes contains amendments to firearms-related legislation.
“Thank you for the opportunity to appear today. The NFF acknowledges the terrible events at Bondi Beach in December. We believe there is no place for such violence and hatred in Australia.
“This Bill covers a wide range of issues from antisemitism and extremism to firearms. The NFF’s role is to ensure that farmers have the tools they need to do their jobs properly. That’s why today I can speak about the parts of the bill that relate to firearms and how firearms are a critical tool to uphold our on-farm biosecurity and animal welfare.
“The NFF supports sensible reforms that strengthen community safety. We recognise that the intent of this Bill is not to restrict the lawful and safe use of firearms in agriculture. However, it is vital to ensure that law-abiding farmers – who rely on firearms as an essential tool for food and fibre production – do not face unintended consequences from rushing the process.
“I welcome questions from the Committee.”
