The National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) today welcomed the appointment of the Hon. Neil Andrew AO as the new Chair of the Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA).
NFF Water Taskforce Chair, Les Gordon, said Mr Andrew was well-placed to assume the role.
“Mr Andrew has extensive experience in public policy and long-standing interests in water through his involvement in the horticulture industry and irrigation sector,” Mr Gordon said.
“The NFF and its Members look forward to working more closely with the MDBA, as it progresses the implementation of the Basin Plan.
“We want to work together on important issues such as managing constraints and the adjustment of sustainable diversion limits.
“As we’ve said before, for the Basin Plan to be a success, we need a holistic view that balances the social impacts on communities, the economic success of water-dependent industries and the needs of the environment.
“One of Mr Andrew’s first priorities should be visiting regional communities located in both the north and south of the Basin. Understanding the issues for different communities and different interests is vital.
“We encourage him to take a tour of the basin with us to see the situation first hand,” Mr Gordon said.
Mr Gordon also thanked outgoing MDBA Chair, Craig Knowles, for his service; and wished him well with his future endeavours.
